The fish will be grown in a closed containment system with a controlled environment, called Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS).
A closed circuit offers a range of advantages over the traditional sea cages for the production of the fish, for instance, the closed circuit guarantees the temperature for the ideal growth of the Amberjack, the quality of the water and the oxygen are under constant control, ensuring that the fish are developing at an optimum speed. A sea cage suffers from the lack of control over the temperature, as the temperature shifts through the seasons, and when the temperature drops, the fish eats less; being in control of the temperature allows for the fish to be in constant growth. Due to the temperature cycles, fish grow a 30% less every year than they do in a closed circuit.
Another advantage of the closed circuit is the fact that the fish are isolated from the sea, which means that the levels of water pollution are under control, as well as any diseases are eradicated and the fish are kept away from any parasites that can be found in the sea. The current loss percentage at sea stands at 15%; 15% of the fish being produced do not make it to the fishing stage, whereas in a closed circuit, the percentage drops to 3-4%.
The reasons Alicante is the chosen location for the development of the plant are various. One of the reasons would be that the port of Alicante is eager to host the development of new projects, as it has plots of land available. Location is very important too, Alicante is located in the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, facilitating any issues that might arise from the transport needed for the export of the fish. However, the most important reason from the perspective of an investor, is the fact that the local government of Alicante, provides state and European subsidies for the development of the fish industry in the area, in an effort to incentivise new businesses to launch their projects and promote new developments in the region.
